I'll Always Write Back

“Whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world a door opens to allow in more light.”
 —Vera Nazarian

Caitlin Alifirenka, the author of “I Will Always Write Back” opened many doors this month for 7th graders at LMS.  Her book, co-written with Martin Ganda, takes place during her middle school years when she signed up with her school to be a pen pal with Martin, a young man from Zimbabwe. This dual memoir has now inspired many of our young readers to wonder about the world outside of Londonderry and how they can make a difference, however small, in someone’s life.

Each team spent an hour listening to Caitlin’s story and hearing about the ripple affect her letters had on the lives of their two families.   Now, 150 students are searching with their teachers and Caitlin to find a school in Africa that might begin this same exchange.  Students are busy writing their introduction letters and the LMS PTO committed this month to providing the postage for the first exchange.  The decision was made to use snail mail rather than email to provide a more authentic experience and teachers are thrilled that our learners will be able to practice their writing skills in such a meaningful way.
